Cynthia spent over three decades teaching primarily in independent schools in Washington DC and Northern Virginia. Since retiring from National Cathedral School, she has turned her energies to supporting innovative educators in learner-focused environments. Her expertise ranges from administrative coaching to curriculum design. Cynthia came to love writing cross-disciplinary curricula during her early teaching career in the United Kingdom in the early 1990s. At Rivendell, she co-authored the school's hallmark critical thinking curriculum, The Rivendell Road. At the Bill of Rights Institute (BRI), she led professional development initiatives for teachers and edited the first edition of BRI’s well-received history and civic virtue curriculum, Heroes & Villains, now in its third edition.
Beyond the classroom, she served on the board of Cornerstone School, an urban classical K-12 school in Washington, DC and is currently on the board of Tyndale Christian School, a classical Charlotte Mason inspired school in Northern Virginia.
Cynthia supports nationwide civics education on BRI’s K-8 Advisory Council, the Jack Miller Center’s National Civics Council, and on the board of Izzit.org, an educational initiative of the Free to Choose Network. Additionally, she is a member of the State Policy Network (SPN) Education Council and the grants committee for Ed-Prize, an SPN program focused on improving educational opportunity and outcomes.
